Loading a different tape for playback is as simple as clicking on it in the tape drawer. AdvertisementĮverything you could want to do with this app can be done in this interface: switch between stereo and mono recording (while a Mac can't technically record in real stereo, it does duplicate a single track and apply it to both channels) change the three preset qualities low, medium, and high quality edit the tape label and notes and monitor audio levels. Mac OS X's trademark widgets are still there, and the app just gives you a familiar, user-friendly, and dare I say "fun" way to perform the relatively simple task of recording audio. The difference between this non-traditional UI and a non-traditional UI like the CanoScan Toolbox is that Tape Deck's isn't horrible. It isn't traditional, and it probably breaks just about every user interface guideline there is. Tape Deck's UI isn't what most of us are used to in an application. Tape Deck isn't bloated with features or totally unnecessary eye-candy, and best of all, anyone who has ever used a tape recorder will be able to use it right away.

Liscio began writing software for Mac computers in 2003, when he was in the final year of his computer science degree at the University of Waterloo. “So if you want to plan your treatment around the walls to reduce echoes, FuzzMeasure can give you an acoustical picture of the room,” he says. It allows people who are building acoustical spaces, such as concert halls, to accurately measure the acoustics.

There is also a sophisticated chord detection feature and options for switching between notes on different strings. They can draw positions of the notes on the spectrograph itself and the program tells them what fret they need. The software allows a person to import whatever song they want to practise, select the part they want to practise from the spectrograph and slow down the speed without changing the pitch, allowing the notes to be heard clearly.īeyond independent pitch and speed control, Capo allows musicians to easily generate a tablature for guitar music. Liscio, who runs a software business, Supermegaultragroovy, out of his home in Waterloo, says musicians like Capo because of the ease of use. The result, Capo for Apple computers, iPhones and iPads, has attracted “thousands” of users and recently won the Waterloo independent software developer a design award at Apple’s Worldwide Developers’ Conference in San Francisco. The solution, he decided, was to create his own.

WATERLOO - When Christopher Liscio began to learn how to play guitar in 2007, he was frustrated by the lack of easy-to-use software for someone like himself, who was learning to play by ear.
